Heat Protection

The Queer Center should remain a comfortable place for our communities even in the summer. That’s why we’ve put together a few guidelines for dealing with the heat.

Here’s how we keep the Queer Center cool:

  • Create a draft.
Open windows in several rooms to allow air to circulate. When it’s hot outside, please close the curtains in front of the open windows. Ventilating with the curtains closed helps cool down the QuZ even during the day. In the evening, when outside temperatures drop, ventilation is even more effective. That’s why we ask you to ventilate during evening events as well.
Please close all windows before leaving the QuZ.

  • Close all curtains.
The Queer Center is on the 5th floor and has many south-facing windows. It heats up very quickly when the sun is out. The curtains prevent this to a large extent.
Please also check before leaving the Queer Center to make sure the curtains are closed in all rooms.

Here’s what we do when it’s hot:

  • Keep the air moving.
We have fans, air purifiers, and hand fans for this purpose.
Opening the windows with the curtains closed helps cool down the QuZ.

  • Make ice cubes.
We have a supply of ice cube bags. Please make new ice cubes when the existing ones run out. You can also fill ice cube bags with juice for mini ice portions.

  • Chill drinks.
The drink supply is on the shelf in the Yellow Room. Please restock the fridge yourself so there are always cool drinks available.

  • Spray water mist.
There are small water spray bottles. People can use them to spray themselves. Or they can wet their arms and legs with water at the sink.

  • Donate ice cream.
The fridge has a small freezer compartment. You can put donated ice cream in there.
If there’s enough money, the QuZ also buys ice cream itself.
